00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.540
Welcome to Allowed and Lifted. I'm your host,
00:00:02.600 --> 00:00:04.879
Betsy Hamm. And today's quick lift is all about
00:00:04.879 --> 00:00:09.300
three powerful words, active, ageless, and authentic.
00:00:10.080 --> 00:00:12.359
In my recent conversation with Patti Sibach and
00:00:12.359 --> 00:00:14.259
Kathy Anderson -Martin, they shared what they
00:00:14.259 --> 00:00:16.800
call the triple threat. And it's not about doing
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:19.379
it all. It's about living true, moving with purpose,
00:00:19.579 --> 00:00:22.820
and thriving at every stage of life. They reminded
00:00:22.820 --> 00:00:25.100
us that you can't pour from an empty cup. That
00:00:25.100 --> 00:00:27.739
health and wellness fuel Everything else and
00:00:27.739 --> 00:00:29.820
that age is never a limit. It's just a number
00:00:29.820 --> 00:00:32.719
So in this quick lift, I'll break down the biggest
00:00:32.719 --> 00:00:34.640
lessons and give you practical ways to apply
00:00:34.640 --> 00:00:45.460
them right now Let's dig into the key takeaways
00:00:45.460 --> 00:00:49.270
and action items first up authentic Kathy gave
00:00:49.270 --> 00:00:51.929
the definition of authentic as true to oneself,
00:00:52.390 --> 00:00:54.409
your values and your personality. I think it's
00:00:54.409 --> 00:00:56.149
great to revisit this definition because it's
00:00:56.149 --> 00:00:58.310
a word we throw around a lot. And at the end
00:00:58.310 --> 00:01:00.030
of the day, it's about being true to who you
00:01:00.030 --> 00:01:03.240
are. We try to be so many things to so many people.
00:01:03.299 --> 00:01:06.859
We try to be these amazing moms and wives and
00:01:06.859 --> 00:01:09.359
coworkers and friends and daughters and the list
00:01:09.359 --> 00:01:11.959
goes on. So sometimes we kind of forget who we
00:01:11.959 --> 00:01:14.219
are and what we really need to be focused on
00:01:14.219 --> 00:01:16.079
because it's difficult to be all things to all
00:01:16.079 --> 00:01:18.920
people. You need to be true to yourself. So sometimes
00:01:18.920 --> 00:01:21.599
we need to take a step back and reprioritize.
00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:24.099
Now, I do love that they made the point that
00:01:24.099 --> 00:01:26.400
being true to yourself doesn't mean that you
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:29.480
don't be respectful to what other people feel.
00:01:29.709 --> 00:01:32.590
need. So it's a balance. And I joked like, yeah,
00:01:32.650 --> 00:01:34.590
can I just go on a two month vacation and you
00:01:34.590 --> 00:01:36.870
know, leave my job and my family and just because
00:01:36.870 --> 00:01:39.269
I need to recenter, that'd be amazing. But that
00:01:39.269 --> 00:01:41.670
would not be respectful to others. Patty was
00:01:41.670 --> 00:01:43.829
very authentic. And she shared a story about
00:01:43.829 --> 00:01:47.030
when she was 40, she felt like a failure. And
00:01:47.030 --> 00:01:49.030
none of her cups were full because she was trying
00:01:49.030 --> 00:01:51.769
to balance work and kids and life and a failed
00:01:51.769 --> 00:01:54.269
marriage. And she had to take a step back and
00:01:54.269 --> 00:01:56.370
put what was most important first, which was
00:01:56.370 --> 00:01:59.480
her kids. So she had to reshift she had to focus.
00:01:59.980 --> 00:02:02.340
And the biggest thing is, in addition to refocusing,
00:02:02.500 --> 00:02:05.260
she had to give herself grace. This is something
00:02:05.260 --> 00:02:07.219
I think we need to remind ourselves of time and
00:02:07.219 --> 00:02:10.039
time again. We hold ourselves to such high standards
00:02:10.039 --> 00:02:12.719
and want to be so amazing. And sometimes you
00:02:12.719 --> 00:02:14.219
just have to give yourself grace. We're going
00:02:14.219 --> 00:02:16.319
to have those rough days, rough weeks, maybe
00:02:16.319 --> 00:02:18.379
even a rough month where we're struggling. So
00:02:18.379 --> 00:02:20.080
you have to give yourself grace and know that
00:02:20.080 --> 00:02:23.650
you can reprioritize and move on. I also love
00:02:23.650 --> 00:02:25.810
that Kathy talked about majoring on the majors
00:02:25.810 --> 00:02:28.370
and letting go of the small stuff. That's so
00:02:28.370 --> 00:02:31.250
true. We are all guilty of that at times where
00:02:31.250 --> 00:02:33.550
we're trying to do all things for all people.
00:02:33.849 --> 00:02:36.189
And it's just taking a step back and focusing
00:02:36.189 --> 00:02:38.150
on what's really, really important and letting
00:02:38.150 --> 00:02:40.069
go of the small stuff. And as we've discussed
00:02:40.069 --> 00:02:42.729
on other episodes, whether that's outsourcing,
00:02:43.150 --> 00:02:45.430
getting help, or just not making cookies for
00:02:45.430 --> 00:02:47.509
the bake sale, it's going to be okay. Action
00:02:47.509 --> 00:02:50.490
item here is identify your true priorities this
00:02:50.490 --> 00:02:52.819
season. As I mentioned, your priorities are going
00:02:52.819 --> 00:02:56.000
to change throughout your life. Ask what is really
00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:59.680
important and what is just noise. And as a reminder,
00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:01.520
being true to yourself doesn't mean ignoring
00:03:01.520 --> 00:03:05.379
how choices affect loved ones. And lastly, practice
00:03:05.379 --> 00:03:09.300
grace. Next up, action. If you don't have a healthy
00:03:09.300 --> 00:03:12.280
body mind and spirit, you can't be authentic
00:03:12.280 --> 00:03:15.680
It's hard to be authentic or confident when you're
00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:18.979
miserable in your own skin Cathy shared her story
00:03:18.979 --> 00:03:21.060
of getting healthy and how everything changed
00:03:21.060 --> 00:03:23.159
when her health changed She started focusing
00:03:23.159 --> 00:03:26.620
on being better being physically active Patty
00:03:26.620 --> 00:03:29.080
gave a great analogy of you're given one body.
00:03:29.180 --> 00:03:31.219
You have to take care of it just like a car.
00:03:31.500 --> 00:03:33.280
Imagine if you only had one car your entire life
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:35.520
that was supposed to get you around. You'd probably
00:03:35.520 --> 00:03:37.840
take better care of it, right? And you have to
00:03:37.840 --> 00:03:39.840
look at that same way with your body. We have
00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:42.280
one body. So think about how you can take better
00:03:42.280 --> 00:03:44.680
care of it. And that comes into being physically
00:03:44.680 --> 00:03:47.699
active, what we eat, and just how those things
00:03:47.699 --> 00:03:50.680
impact stress on our lives and also how you treat
00:03:50.680 --> 00:03:53.590
yourself. We talked a lot about healthy habits
00:03:53.590 --> 00:03:55.830
and making it sustainable. Patty and Kathy were
00:03:55.830 --> 00:03:59.050
not here to peddle some amazing diet or tell
00:03:59.050 --> 00:04:01.729
you to go to the gym seven days a week or restrict
00:04:01.729 --> 00:04:04.849
your calories to an insane level. It's just making
00:04:04.849 --> 00:04:07.750
good choices and making them a habit and making
00:04:07.750 --> 00:04:10.030
it something that can be sustainable. They talked
00:04:10.030 --> 00:04:11.530
about their giving wellness program that they
00:04:11.530 --> 00:04:14.189
launched which I love and Kathy shared how part
00:04:14.189 --> 00:04:16.149
of her journey to being healthier is starting
00:04:16.149 --> 00:04:19.670
to do 10 ,000 steps years ago and she has this
00:04:19.670 --> 00:04:21.810
amazing record of getting her 10 ,000 steps in
00:04:21.810 --> 00:04:24.269
a day. It's become her stress reliever and she
00:04:24.269 --> 00:04:26.329
enjoys being outside. So it's really about finding
00:04:26.329 --> 00:04:28.350
your thing. Maybe it's going on walks like Kathy
00:04:28.350 --> 00:04:30.589
talked about. Maybe it's going to the gym and
00:04:30.589 --> 00:04:32.589
just walking on a treadmill starting to lift
00:04:32.589 --> 00:04:35.110
weights. It's just finding the thing that you
00:04:35.110 --> 00:04:37.569
do enjoy spending time doing because it doesn't
00:04:37.569 --> 00:04:40.720
become a chore. becomes part of your habit. They
00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:42.680
also talked about finding your why and those
00:04:42.680 --> 00:04:45.040
reasons change over time. At the end of the day,
00:04:45.139 --> 00:04:46.879
it's about being healthy. Maybe it's because
00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:48.800
you do need to lose some weight. Maybe you need
00:04:48.800 --> 00:04:50.420
to get your blood pressure or cholesterol level
00:04:50.420 --> 00:04:52.439
down. Maybe it's because you want to be a great
00:04:52.439 --> 00:04:54.420
example for your kids. And I think that's an
00:04:54.420 --> 00:04:56.680
awesome point. And something I've certainly considered
00:04:56.680 --> 00:04:58.740
through the years is as I shared on the episode,
00:04:58.779 --> 00:05:01.339
I enjoy working out. I think it's a great stress
00:05:01.339 --> 00:05:03.560
reliever, whether it's yoga or going to the gym.
00:05:03.680 --> 00:05:05.959
Back in the day, I used to run a lot, but it's
00:05:05.959 --> 00:05:08.240
finding something that I spend time doing that
00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:10.839
makes me feel better. and I hope that my girls
00:05:10.839 --> 00:05:12.620
notice that. Now, of course, they're in sports
00:05:12.620 --> 00:05:15.579
mode, so working out isn't on their list if it's
00:05:15.579 --> 00:05:17.740
not related to sports, but I hope they start
00:05:17.740 --> 00:05:19.639
to see that, you know, oh, when I was growing
00:05:19.639 --> 00:05:22.259
up, my mom always did take time to go to the
00:05:22.259 --> 00:05:25.240
gym, go to yoga, and to focus on being healthy.
00:05:25.459 --> 00:05:28.120
It's not just about losing weight. Yes, sometimes
00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:30.500
that's a great benefit, but it's about being
00:05:30.500 --> 00:05:32.759
healthy. I also love that they said, it's never
00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:35.459
too late. It's just about movement. So think
00:05:35.459 --> 00:05:37.620
about what you like to do and start spending
00:05:37.620 --> 00:05:39.660
time doing that. And if you don't know how to
00:05:39.660 --> 00:05:42.060
start, consult a professional and I do not mean
00:05:42.060 --> 00:05:45.000
on TikTok. Find somebody locally where you live
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:47.519
and then work with them to set realistic goals,
00:05:47.879 --> 00:05:50.279
small attainable goals, and just start taking
00:05:50.279 --> 00:05:53.459
steps forward. It's just progress. Action item
00:05:53.459 --> 00:05:56.300
here, find your why, let it evolve, pick one
00:05:56.300 --> 00:05:58.939
movement that you love, whether it's walking,
00:05:59.259 --> 00:06:02.100
lifting, dancing, yoga, start small and keep
00:06:02.100 --> 00:06:05.120
it sustainable. And as mentioned, consult a pro
00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:08.600
if needed. The last piece, ageless. I love when
00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:10.819
they got very excited about the fact that they
00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:12.959
love celebrating birthdays because we aren't
00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:15.509
dead. And while we were joking about it, It's
00:06:15.509 --> 00:06:17.949
true. And I think as we go through our lives,
00:06:18.009 --> 00:06:19.769
sometimes we hit these milestone birthdays that
00:06:19.769 --> 00:06:22.310
we're super excited about, you know, 18, 21.
00:06:22.689 --> 00:06:24.949
And then as we keep having those birthdays, we
00:06:24.949 --> 00:06:26.589
sometimes are like, Oh my God, I can't believe
00:06:26.589 --> 00:06:29.709
I'm 40. I can't believe I'm 50. And we have to
00:06:29.709 --> 00:06:31.910
flip the script on that and be thankful that
00:06:31.910 --> 00:06:34.149
we're celebrating those birthdays. And of course
00:06:34.149 --> 00:06:36.339
we want to continue to celebrate birthdays. So
00:06:36.339 --> 00:06:38.139
we're not dead. And while you're doing that,
00:06:38.139 --> 00:06:41.660
you want to have a good lifestyle. And that goes
00:06:41.660 --> 00:06:44.420
back to being active. I also love that they talked
00:06:44.420 --> 00:06:46.079
about part of being ageless is that there's still
00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:49.160
opportunity. They have friends who are thinking
00:06:49.160 --> 00:06:52.220
about retirement, retiring, getting their plan.
00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:54.500
And these two ladies, they have like the pedal
00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:57.240
down and they are continuing to move forward,
00:06:57.680 --> 00:07:00.139
making career changes, making reasonable choices
00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:02.019
of things that they want to do, spending time
00:07:02.019 --> 00:07:04.980
on the stuff that they love. And that's so awesome.
00:07:05.060 --> 00:07:07.079
I love that. they have this almost like second
00:07:07.079 --> 00:07:09.180
act from a professional standpoint that they
00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:11.800
both have been doing and coincidentally both
00:07:11.800 --> 00:07:13.740
of them are helping other people which is pretty
00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:15.899
awesome too. I love that they said they don't
00:07:15.899 --> 00:07:19.040
want to slow down and that's obviously clear
00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:21.139
from the way that they are handling the last
00:07:21.139 --> 00:07:23.420
couple years. The other pieces we talked about
00:07:23.420 --> 00:07:26.319
with ageless is having a sense of humor and being
00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:29.439
able to laugh at yourself is important. Not sweating
00:07:29.439 --> 00:07:31.279
the small stuff. Sometimes you just have to move
00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:33.009
on. The other piece that they talked about, which
00:07:33.009 --> 00:07:35.449
I think is great, it's okay to be down, just
00:07:35.449 --> 00:07:37.689
don't stay there. And in order to not stay there,
00:07:37.750 --> 00:07:39.589
sometimes you can pick yourself up on your own
00:07:39.589 --> 00:07:41.730
and that's great. But sometimes you need those
00:07:41.730 --> 00:07:44.310
supportive friends. And Patty talked about how
00:07:44.310 --> 00:07:46.230
it took her a really long time to find her tribe.
00:07:46.310 --> 00:07:48.129
She always had friends, but they just weren't
00:07:48.129 --> 00:07:50.750
the people who maybe had the same values and
00:07:50.750 --> 00:07:53.449
beliefs and way of life that she did. But now
00:07:53.449 --> 00:07:56.290
she has found her tribe. So she said, find your
00:07:56.290 --> 00:07:58.310
tribe, it's out there. Find people who will cheer
00:07:58.310 --> 00:08:00.550
for you and maybe even smack you when you need
00:08:00.550 --> 00:08:02.839
it. Let's be honest, sometimes that's what we
00:08:02.839 --> 00:08:05.160
also need too. The last thing we talked about
00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:08.519
with ageless is perspective. Often it's not life
00:08:08.519 --> 00:08:10.480
shattering the things that you're stressing about.
00:08:10.860 --> 00:08:13.040
So take a step back and think about what can
00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:15.680
you control and what can you not and what really
00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:17.800
is going to have a major impact on moving forward.
00:08:18.160 --> 00:08:19.560
There's going to be times in life where things
00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:21.360
don't go your way. There's going to be moments
00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:24.639
and it's not if it's when it happens to everybody,
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:27.360
right? Sometimes big, sometimes small, but things
00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:30.160
are going to happen. So get through it, get the
00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:32.820
support that you need and move on. Action item
00:08:32.820 --> 00:08:34.919
here, find your tribe, people who cheer you on
00:08:34.919 --> 00:08:37.320
and hold you accountable. Embrace the change
00:08:37.320 --> 00:08:40.360
and keep learning. Age is a number, not a limit.
00:08:40.679 --> 00:08:42.840
And when hard moments hit, because they will.
00:08:43.309 --> 00:08:45.850
Don't stay stuck. I love how Patty and Kathy
00:08:45.850 --> 00:08:48.009
show us that being authentic means focusing on
00:08:48.009 --> 00:08:50.950
what truly matters. Being active means caring
00:08:50.950 --> 00:08:53.230
for your body and mind so you can show up fully.
00:08:53.529 --> 00:08:56.049
And being ageless means refusing to let your
00:08:56.049 --> 00:08:58.269
years define you. If you haven't listened to
00:08:58.269 --> 00:09:00.950
Kathy and Patty's episode, I strongly encourage
00:09:00.950 --> 00:09:03.690
you to do so. And as always follow Loud and Lifted
00:09:03.690 --> 00:09:07.370
on Instagram for ongoing advice and leadership
00:09:07.370 --> 00:09:10.070
guidance. Thanks for tuning in to Loud and Lifted.
00:09:10.110 --> 00:09:13.230
Until next time, keep showing up authentic. brilliant
00:09:13.230 --> 00:09:14.389
and unstoppable.

After graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Marketing, the majority of Kathy’s career experience was in sales and national account management. In August 2000, Kathy’s life and career plans abruptly changed direction. A few years later, Kathy and her husband were blessed to adopt their second daughter, Ashlyn.
These major life changes led to Kathy’s renewed perspectives on life, priorities and to her second career within the non-profit community. Kathy served as Director of Resource Development, The Salvation Army Harrisburg Capital City Region. At The Salvation Army, Kathy was responsible for developing community partnerships and resources to fund annual operations and a major capital campaign to construct a new Salvation Army Service & Worship Center in Harrisburg.
